Nandi, the sacred bull, is revered as a powerful deity in Hindu tradition. Known as the protector of Dharma, he serves as the chief of the Ganas—the divine attendants of Lord Shiva. Nandi is also regarded as the leader of the 18 Siddhas, symbolizing profound spiritual gifts, and is widely worshipped as a granter of boons.
According to temple lore, a priest who regularly fetched water for the abhisekam (ritual bathing of the deity) was once harassed by a demon named Kanjan. When informed, Lord Shiva commanded Nandi to vanquish the demon, and Nandi fulfilled the task with divine strength. It is believed that Nandi faces outward at temple entrances to guard and protect the sacred space from negative forces.
